The term shopping center is widely use in Europe, Australia, South America, however the term shopping mall is also used predominantly in North America. Other terms like shopping precinct and shopping arcade are also used. In North America, Gulf Countries, and India the term shopping mall is usually applied to enclosed retail structures while shopping center usually refers to open-air retail complexes; both type of facilities have large parking lots, face major traffic materials, and have few pedestrian connections to surrounding neighborhoods. Whatever term they may use, it would always mean the same, it would only differ how big the space it occupies and how many store they can accommodate . One of the biggest mall in West Nyack , New York is the Palisades Center Mall and is the eight largest shopping mall in the United Statesby total area and sixth by largest gross space that can be leased.
Palisades Center is the most lucrative Mall in United States, which houses over 400 stores, receives 20 million visitors a year and produces $57 million a year in taxes which includes $40 million in sales tax and $17 million in property tax. the mall is currently operated by the Pyramid Companies which is the original developer and current owner. According to it's sponsoring partner, Thomas Valenti, it took 16 years to get the mall approved and built. The 875,000 square-foot mall was proposed in 1985 with a goal of luring upscale retailers like Lord and Taylor, and a promise to keep sales tax dollars from slipping across state lines into New Jersey. Local residents opposed the mall predicting that it would bring crime, increased traffic, air pollution and an economic downturn to the area's downtown and that the site was not tested for toxins. The construction of the mall faced a number of environmental obstacles before it began. But looking how progressive the mall today, it seems to me that it became stronger as years passed.
The mall has all that you could ever ask for, food, shop, and especially entertainment for the whole family. they have Levity Live Club and Lucky Strike Bowling Alley and Lounge for the adults while Carousel, Ferris Wheel and Ice Rink, Roller Coaster, IMax Movie Theater for the young ones, and the newest addition to the entertainment is the obstacle course located in the middle of the mall. This 2013 Palisades Center will be reconstructed to a more modern and stylish look. I hope they could add more colors and lights on the walls, they could also use some artificial plants for a more relax and happy environment. Just like on their lounge area, the cozy feeling is there because of the indoor artificial reeds and artificial grass that they have put into a contemporary planter to complete the look of their lounge area. They could either use the real plants or the artificial ones, or they could just use both, it doesn't matter as long as the greens and blooming flowers can be seen in the designated areas of the mall.
